3 Easy Steps to Self-Care

So, it’s the year of “self-care” and you’re hearing about it everywhere! Most of the time you’re shaking your head thinking, “as if I have time, money or energy to spend on myself right now!” Life is busy, we get it – but it really is essential to take steps to bring extra space and joy into your daily routine.

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

It’s true. Yet, many of us put our own care to the side, feeling we have bigger responsibilities (careers, families) that need us. You may feel guilty about taking time for you, indulgent for buying yourself a gift or even irresponsible for spending energy on self-serving activities. What we forget is, we cannot serve the important people in, and aspects of, our lives if we don’t first look after ourselves.

Put on your own oxygen mask, before helping others.

Okay, the plane-crash reference might be a little dramatic, but it helps demonstrate the point. The best way to give our full selves to everyone and everything in our lives is to love ourselves a little better. The task can seem daunting, so start simple!

  1. Give yourself a gift

Choose something you want, not necessarily something you need. You don’t have to go big to make an impact, but you do need to choose something that will bring you joy! Choose something fun, not something practical.

  1. Get away

It’s not likely you can hop on a flight tonight, but getting away doesn’t mean you have to leave town – or even your own home! Whether you have a houseful of kiddos or maybe a roommate, there’s still opportunity for a moment of self-care amongst it all.

Consider: A hot bath – don’t forget the cup of tea (or glass of wine), bath bomb and your favorite playlist!

  1. Put yourself in focus

Maybe it’s been so long since you practiced self-care you don’t even remember what little things bring you love. The best way for you to take care of yourself may not be obvious and it may not be something you can put into practice today – but finding out what that act of self-care looks like, is essential!

Consider: Before bed, write a list of simple things you enjoy! Consider activities (did you once love taking spin classes?), treats (does your body feel happier when you take time to meal prep?) and rest (would a little more sleep – and a little less screen time – make a difference in your day?).

Self-care is not selfish.

Self-care is necessary and not only is it not self-indulgent, it’s self-respect. Whether you’re ready to jet off on a solo getaway, order up your favorite treat or finally dive into that pile of books you’ve been meaning to read – just take one step toward self-care, every aspect of, and person  in, your life will benefit!
